Fast-rising teenage rock trio Riff Wood have shared their latest single, “Beyond A Tree,” marking the final preview of their highly anticipated sophomore album, Butterfly In Black And White. The project is scheduled for release on September 18 via Giant Music. Recorded alongside 3X GRAMMY®-winning producer Rob Cavallo—known for his work with industry titans like Green Day, My Chemical Romance, and Paramore—the new track continues a massive breakout run for the Utah-based group. As they emerge as one of alternative rock’s most promising new acts, the band has already successfully completed their largest headline tour to date across North America and the UK.
Comprised of best friends Carson Groves, Hyrum Russon, and Shredder, Riff Wood have cultivated significant momentum through a combination of viral digital content and high-energy live performances. “Beyond A Tree” joins a robust collection of previously released tracks from the 13-song album, including “Run It,” “Butterfly In Black And White,” “Shy Guy,” “And Now,” “PUNK,” and “Manufactured Tragedy.”
Reflecting on the emotional core of the new single, Hyrum explains, “’Beyond A Tree’ is a song about finding hope or ‘a glimpse of sun’ in moments of sadness. It touches on the feeling of missing a chance while it was right in front of me the whole time. I always hoped for a second chance, and that is what I feel like this song reflects.”
The band’s trajectory has been nothing short of meteoric. After forming at the age of 11, they broke through with their debut album, Tough Luck, which featured fan-favorites “I Won’t” and “Blur.” The latter track became a viral sensation, accumulating millions of streams and helping the band amass over 60 million views on TikTok. This digital success caught the attention of Rob Cavallo, who reached out to the trio via direct message—a surreal full-circle moment for a band that grew up covering the music of the very artists Cavallo helped define.
