Usually, if I have to imagine throwing many different styles together in a track, without any context I’d imagine a chaotic song as a result. Though, this couldn’t be more further from the truth this time around for “Bewitchu” by Johnny Champagne.
You can find just about anything on this one – a melodic rap flow, funky bass line, minimalist drum beat, psychedelic dreamy synths, brass phrases and to top it all off, of course – a warm jazz piano.
Once you hear a track like that, you stop thinking of all those above as separate musical concepts but realize that actually – the combination of those is what actually constitutes some of the best neo-soul new age hip-hop. At least to me.
