The New Radicals, the iconic one-hit-wonders led by frontman Gregg Alexander, have officially returned with their first original song in nearly three decades. The band, known for their massive 1998 hit “You Get What You Give,” has unveiled “One Night Only (Break Loose Break Free!),” a track written specifically for the soundtrack of the upcoming romantic comedy One Night Only, starring Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner.

Following the massive success of their debut album, Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too, the group disbanded in 1999. In the years since, Alexander has cemented his status as a prolific songwriter and producer, crafting hits for artists such as Adam Levine and Sophie Ellis-Bextor. His work on the latter’s “Murder on the Dancefloor” saw a massive resurgence in popularity, leading to a unique collaboration where Michelle Branch recently rerecorded the track with the New Radicals themselves.

The band’s return is not entirely unexpected, as they previously reunited in 2021 to perform at President Biden’s inauguration. More recently, in 2024, they regrouped to record their own version of “Murder on the Dancefloor,” a tribute to second gentleman Doug Emhoff, who famously utilized the song during his campaign appearances. With this latest release, the New Radicals prove that their signature sound remains as vibrant and relevant as ever.
