Michael P. Desronvil, the sole juror whose holdout in the case against Lindsay Clancy—who was on trial for killing her three young children—led to a mistrial on Sept. 4, has stood by his vote to convict, asserting that he held no doubts regarding her guilt.
In a statement released on Friday, Desronvil explained that during the deliberation process, other jurors frequently cut off his attempts to discuss specific theories regarding the case, as reported by The New York Times. One fellow juror, Paula Devlin, previously described Desronvil as “very arrogant” in an interview with NBC10, claiming that while he admitted to having reasonable doubt, he refused to agree to a verdict.
“I didn’t have any doubts,” Desronvil stated in a response to NewsNation. “As I tried to explain different possible theories during deliberation, I kept getting cut off as if I had doubts based on the evidence present.”
Through his attorney, Edward Paltzik, Desronvil further clarified his position: “Based on all the physical evidence, key witnesses and what the prosecution presented, I thought it was enough proof that she knew exactly what she was doing and planned.”
The high-profile trial concluded in a mistrial after the jury declared they were deadlocked. Despite the defense’s attempt to intervene, a higher court allowed the deliberations to continue, though the 12-member panel remained split 11-1 for at least two days. Clancy had admitted to strangling her three children in January 2023, with her defense team arguing that she was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and should not be held criminally responsible. Conversely, prosecutors maintained that while Clancy was struggling with her mental health, she remained fully aware that her actions were wrong and urged the jury to convict her on three counts of first-degree murder.
The case has since become a viral phenomenon, sparking intense national debate regarding postpartum mental health issues and the scrutiny of jury deliberations. As of now, prosecutors have not indicated whether they intend to retry the case. Lindsay Clancy, who was paralyzed after jumping from a window following the incident, remains in custody at a state-run psychiatric facility.
