Charley Yang has officially unveiled his latest artistic endeavor, chandol, with the release of his debut record, Mercurial. The album serves as a sonic kaleidoscope, capturing the complexities of young adult life through a diverse blend of indie pop, guitar rock, folk, and hyperpop. With production expertise from Jeremie Inhaber—known for his work with Vampire Weekend—and live drum contributions from the legendary Aaron Sterling, who has collaborated with icons like Harry Styles, Lana Del Rey, and Lizzie McAlpine, the project stands as Yang’s most intimate and vulnerable work to date.

Mercurial invites listeners into what Yang describes as his own “memory palace,” a space where he navigates past lives while seeking reconciliation with his present self. The album features standout tracks such as the guitar-driven alt-rock anthem “Breakfast in Bed,” the hyper-pop explosion “2002,” and the fan-favorite “What’s The Rush,” which captures the intensity of a summer storm.

The release is accompanied by a music video for the album’s closer, “Doubt.” The track marks a significant evolution from Yang’s early GarageBand recordings, featuring a sophisticated build of bass-driven rhythms and electric guitar melodies that culminate in a powerful rock finale. The accompanying video depicts a celebratory summer road trip, complete with subtle Easter eggs for observant fans.

Reflecting on the creative process, Yang shared, “’Mercurial’ is a collection of songs I wrote to talk about who I am and where I come from. I’ve kept both the songwriting and production as intimate as possible, with minimal outside interference. It was a refreshing experience to work on something so honest after feeling that my previous work didn’t fully represent the artist I want to be.”

In support of the album, Yang is embarking on his first headline tour as chandol. The run includes stops at iconic venues such as New York City’s Mercury Lounge, Boston’s The Sinclair, and the Troubadour in Los Angeles. With over 2 million streams already accumulated on Spotify, the project is gaining significant momentum as Yang steps into this new chapter.
