Provincials are a British band comprised of singer Polly Perry, formerly of Polly & the Billets Doux, guitarist Seb Hunter, bassist Dan Parkinson and drummer and pianist Steve Gibson. They are back with a new album called Heaven Protect Us which is out now via Itchen Recordings label.
According to the press release, they have expanded from their dark folk roots to include drums (played by Steve – his first instrument) on a number of tracks, as well as now incorporating bass, synths and strings. This richer, deeper sound palate has enabled the band to go to places they’d never previously envisaged, immediately exemplified by the opening track, the psychedelic funk epic Planetary Stand-Off, which kicks off with lone handclaps before building into a propulsive, towering Zeppelin / Funkadelic wah-rawk tower of power. In contrast tracks such as Amaranth and Outskirts hark back to the bewitched folk style of the early Provincials releases.
Today we have ther pleasure to share a new video for the track “Planetary Stand-Off“. Guitarist Seb Hunter, guitarist of Provincials, explains: “For our first video as a four-piece (with our producer Dan Parkinson on bass), we wanted to play with high-contrast b&w dynamics in a studio context. It’s all cut-up kinetics, perfect for easily the most ‘rock’ single we’ve ever released. Shot & edited as always by our great friend & visionary Clive Tagg.”
