Back in 2021, Scottish musician, composer and sound artist Lomond Campbell has released a new album called LŪP which is out now via One Little Independent Records. According to the press release, Although his music is grounded in sound it often incorporates sculpture, engineering, product design and visual art. Using a combination of hardware hacking and industrial manufacturing techniques, Lomond builds his own unique instruments and devices for creating sound which he combines with modular synths, piano and voice.

Now he has announced the release of Lost Loops which will be out on March 25th. The music on ‘Lost Loops’ was written and recorded specifically for the purpose of making tape loops. Lomond initially had no intention of releasing this music, only spooling it out and slicing it up, but upon further inspection what would be lost to the cutting room floor contained a breadth of ambient gems perfect for observing further possibilities. What can be found within this exclusive collection are deep cuts and more expansive ruminations that drift between blissful post-classical, cavernous soundscapes and glitchy experimentalism.

He tells us; “What I learned from making my album LŪP was that using tape with elaborate or complex music on it rarely made for an interesting tape loop. Invariably, it was clear and unfussy melodies, or long decaying chords that yielded the best results.  So, my approach to making Lost Loops was quite different to how I would normally make music. To get favourable results I experimented with isolating backing vocals and lap steel guitar lines from old recordings and blended that with slowly evolving synth textures. Drum machines were all but banned as heavy rhythms often seemed to be problematic, so I was more likely to just hit record and meander on the piano…and everything got slathered in vast reverbs.  With Lost Loops I completely submitted and let the process decide the sound of the record.”
