On Friday, May 8, Phoebe Bridgers made a highly anticipated return to the stage, performing her first live solo show in three years. The event took place at the Liberty, a 400-capacity theater in Roswell, New Mexico. The invite-only, no-phones-allowed performance offered an exclusive look at the artist’s creative direction, featuring a mix of fan favorites and a preview of her forthcoming third studio album.
During the set, Bridgers performed staples such as “Motion Sickness,” “Kyoto,” and “Garden Song.” She was accompanied by frequent collaborator Christian Lee Hutson, who provided instrumental support on guitar, harmonica, and percussion. Bridgers reportedly described the intimate show as a “test” for future performances.
The evening was marked by several intriguing developments. One of the new songs premiered during the set reportedly addressed the 2023 death of her father. Additionally, fans in attendance received fragments of a painting stored within the lockable pouches used to secure their phones, leading to widespread speculation that these pieces may reveal the cover art for her next record.
The momentum surrounding Bridgers’ return continued the following day. On May 9, flyers for another performance appeared in Lubbock, Texas, coinciding with reports of a series of photos depicting the artist in the studio with a notable group of collaborators, including Matty Healy, Alex G, Jack Antonoff, and her partner, Bo Burnham. Pitchfork has reached out to Bridgers’ team for comment.
New merchandise available at the Roswell show also hinted at potential lyrics from the upcoming project: “Now I can’t see any stars in the sky. When a dreams comes true, a fantasy dies…but we’re gonna be alright, me and you.”
Bridgers, who released her acclaimed album Punisher in 2020, has remained busy with various projects, including her work with the supergroup boygenius. The trio, consisting of Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus, enjoyed a successful 2024, winning three Grammy Awards for their debut album, The Record.
