Following a period of intense anticipation, the acclaimed Irish band Fontaines D.C. have officially announced their fifth studio album, Dopamine Chamber. The record is scheduled for release on October 16 via XL Recordings. To mark the announcement, the group has unveiled the lead single, “Marianne,” accompanied by a striking music video directed by Dave Meyers, a filmmaker renowned for his work on some of the most visually arresting projects in modern pop and hip-hop.

Dopamine Chamber was produced by James Ford and serves as the follow-up to the band’s 2024 breakthrough, Romance. That album achieved significant commercial success, earning platinum certification behind the strength of hit singles like “Favourite” and “Starburster.” However, the band appears to be approaching their newfound status with a critical eye. “Marianne” is described as a meditation on escapism, drawing thematic inspiration from the 2024 thriller series Ripley. The album as a whole promises to interrogate the pursuit of pleasure within an increasingly darkening global landscape.

In a recent press statement, frontman Grian Chatten reflected on the creative process behind the record, noting that he sought lyrical inspiration while traveling through Venice, Vienna, and Sicily. “I think Romance was maybe 60 per cent human and 40 per cent corrupted by automation, and a loss of feeling,” Chatten explained. “This one feels more like 60 per cent corrupted—the mask is wearing the face a little more. I felt it would be more powerful to leave the hope out and reflect the ugliness honestly. This one needed to feel more like a catastrophic warning.”
