The multi-talented artist FKA twigs is officially set to step into the shoes of the legendary Josephine Baker. According to Deadline, the singer, dancer, and actress will lead a forthcoming biopic directed by French filmmaker Maïmouna Doucouré. The project, which was initially announced in 2022, is reportedly scheduled to begin production this fall.
Reflecting on the weight of the role, FKA twigs shared her admiration for the historical figure in a recent statement. “Josephine Baker’s extraordinary legacy is such an inspiration to me and to so many people around the world,” she said. “She lives on in our hearts as a visionary, ground-breaking woman whose story is as powerful as it is relevant today.”
The journey to bring Baker’s life to the screen has been long and complex. Notably, a separate television series project centered on the icon, which was slated to star Janelle Monáe, was announced in 2022 but ultimately failed to move forward.
Beyond this high-profile casting, FKA twigs continues to expand her footprint in the film industry. She recently contributed the original song “My Mouth Is Lonely for You” to the soundtrack for the Anne Hathaway-led psychodrama Mother Mary. Additionally, she is slated to appear in The Lonely Woman, a feature film directed by Boy Harsher, alongside a cast that includes Chloë Sevigny, Sturgill Simpson, and Bonnie “Prince” Billy.
Fans of the artist can also look back at her recent musical achievements, including her track Eusexua (Alternate Version), which was highlighted in our recent roundup of the 30 best pop albums of 2025.
