Animated Matter is the project of composer/vocalist Hannah Elizabeth Cox and multisensory artist David Yann Robert. Selkie is the debut album which is out now. The album interprets the Scandinavian, Scottish and Celtic myth of the Selkie: a tragedy of impossible land/sea romance between a man and a shapeshifting seal/woman.
According to the press release, It was recorded in Boston over multiple years of late-night sessions shifting between states of waking and dreaming. Inspired by the rocky coastline of the American Northeast, Fender Rhodes piano, vocals and electronics combine to convey a mysterious oceanic setting. The album begins with an element of moodiness and tension, evolves into more classic songwriting with distinct lyrics at its midpoint and ends in blissful, warm, instrumental tracks.
