A Call for Ethical Oversight

Pope Leo XIV has issued a stern warning regarding the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, advocating for the technology to be “disarmed” and redirected toward the service of humanity. In his inaugural encyclical, titled Magnifica Humanitas: On Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence, the pontiff emphasized that the current trajectory of AI development risks prioritizing corporate profit over the collective well-being of society.

“Humanity, created by God in all its grandeur, is today facing a pivotal choice: either to construct a new Tower of Babel or to build the city in which God and humanity dwell together,” the pope wrote. His message comes at a time when global debates regarding the regulation of machine learning and automated systems have reached a fever pitch.

The Need for Robust Frameworks

The encyclical arrives amidst a shifting political landscape, specifically noting recent efforts by the Trump administration to deregulate the AI sector. Pope Leo XIV cautioned that such a hands-off approach could lead to significant societal harm. He argued that abstract ethical guidelines are insufficient to manage the complexities of modern technology.

“Artificial Intelligence now demands to be disarmed, freed from logics that turn it into an instrument of domination, exclusion and death,” he stated. The pontiff called for “robust legal frameworks, independent oversight, informed users and a political system that does not abdicate its responsibility.” He further warned that a more moral AI is not enough if that morality is determined by a select few.

Vatican Engagement with Industry Leaders

The publication of the encyclical follows a series of high-level discussions at the Vatican, including a recent meeting with representatives from Anthropic. Christopher Olah, a co-founder of the AI company, echoed the pope’s sentiments during his visit, stating, “We need moral voices that the incentives cannot bend.”

As the global community grapples with the integration of AI into daily life, Pope Leo XIV’s intervention marks a significant moment in the intersection of faith and technology, signaling that the Church intends to remain an active participant in the discourse surrounding the future of human innovation.
