One week ago, Gigi Hadid condemned the “terrorizing of innocent people” in light of the IsraelHamas war, a comment sparked by the Hamas attack in Israel that killed more than 1,200 Israelis. In the days since, the death toll in Gaza has risen exponentially as Palestinians have faced retaliation, living under constant attack from Israel without access to water or electricity. The half-Palestinian model took to Instagram this weekend to share an infographic condemning the conflation of support for Palestinians with antisemitism or support for Hamas — and suddenly, the Israeli government has short-term memory loss.

“Have you been sleeping the past week? Or are you just fine turning a blind eye to Jewish babies being butchered in their homes? Your silence has been very clear about where you stand. We see you,” the official Instagram account for the State of Israel wrote in response to Hadid’s post, which read: “There is nothing Jewish about the Israeli government’s treatment of Palestinians. Condemning the Israeli government is not antisemitic and supporting Palestinians is not supporting Hamas.” (Representatives for Hadid did not immediately respond to Rolling Stone‘s request for comment.)

Hadid hasn’t been silent at all, though, and the state issued no response when the model shared her initial post: a lengthy statement that similarly highlighted the notion that being pro-Palestine does not equate to being antisemitic. “I have deep empathy and heartbreak for the Palestinian struggle and life under occupation, it’s a responsibility I hold daily,” she wrote at the time. “I also feel a responsibility to my Jewish friends to make it clear, as I have before: While I have hopes and dreams for Palestinians, none of them include the harm of a Jewish person. The terrorizing of innocent people is not in alignment with and does not do any good for the ‘Free Palestine’ movement.”

Alongside its written response, the State of Israel shared a recreation of the infographic that Hadid boosted. In their version, the messaging about condemning the Israeli government and supporting Palestinians was flipped to read: “There is nothing valiant about Hamas’ massacre of Israelis. Condemning Hamas for what it is (ISIS) is not anti-Palestine and supporting Israelis in their fight against barbaric terrorists is the right thing to do.”

In a secondary post, the State of Israel shared an image of what appears to be a bloodied floor littered with children’s toys and clothing. Tagging Hadid once again, the post read: “If you don’t condemn this your words mean nothing.”

Meanwhile, the first paragraph Hadid wrote in the statement shared to her Instagram account last week read: “My thoughts are with all those affected by this unjustifiable tragedy and every day that innocent lives are taken by this conflict – too many of which are children.”

Hadid and her younger sister, Bella Hadid, have a history of supporting the Palestinian cause. Bella has yet to comment on the current conflict, and representatives did not respond to Rolling Stone‘s request for comment.
