The family of Nolan Wells, joined by prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump and activist Rev. Al Sharpton, held a press conference in New York on Friday, July 10, to demand a thorough and objective investigation into the death of the 18-year-old football player. Wells had been reported missing after a trip to Horn Island, a remote destination off the Mississippi coast, before his body was discovered on July 6.

Seeking Answers in a Troubling Case

“It is clear that this situation must have the most thorough and objective investigation to lead to justice,” Rev. Al Sharpton stated during the conference. He expressed deep skepticism regarding the local authorities’ handling of the case, noting that the circumstances surrounding the teen’s final hours remain highly suspicious. Sharpton highlighted inconsistencies in the accounts provided, specifically questioning why Wells’ personal belongings, including his cell phone and keys, were found in the possession of others who were present on the island.

Distrust in Local Law Enforcement

Ben Crump emphasized that the family’s decision to seek independent legal counsel stems from a profound lack of trust in Mississippi law enforcement. “The history of Mississippi is something that they don’t just read about in books, but it’s a lived experience for many Black Americans,” Crump noted, underscoring the racial dynamics at play in the investigation. To ensure accountability, the family has commissioned an independent autopsy, which was partially funded by former football player and activist Colin Kaepernick.

Wells, described by his mother, Christine Wells-Wonsley, as a “bright light,” was last seen on the island on the Saturday of the July 4 weekend. While local officials maintain that the individuals who accompanied Wells are cooperating with the investigation, the family remains steadfast in their pursuit of the truth. As the investigation continues, the community and civil rights leaders are keeping a close watch on the developments, demanding the transparency and urgency that the Wells family deserves.
