It’s very fitting that Silverstein‘s 16-song double album, Antibloom and Pink Moon arrived in the midst of a milestone year for the band, as they celebrate their 25th anniversary, because both releases perfectly embody the emotion, depth and growth that have made them a staple in the alternative scene for over two decades. Following February’s Antibloom, which featured some of the band’s heaviest and most ambitious work yet, Pink Moon finds them digging deep into the emotional side of their music.
Opening with the emotional intro, “I Love You But I Have To Let You Go”, which sets the tone for the songs that follow, Pink Moon is a dynamic gut-punch from start to finish. While “Negative Space” is a sing-along ready anthem, the explosive “Drain The Blood” explores the inner turmoil and emotional tolls of being an artist, heavy breakdowns balanced perfectly by a stunning guest appearance by Rory Rodriguez of Dayseeker. Darker, heavy tracks like “Widowmaker” and “The Fatalist” are balanced perfectly by the lighter “Autopilot”, which features a fitting guest appearance by Cassadee Pope and head-bobbing-worthy “Death Hold.” Bookending the album is the desolate, emotional “Dying Game”, which feels like a perfect counterpart to “I Love You But I Have To Let You Go”.
What’s great about the two-part album release is how easily digestible it is. While a massive, sixteen-song album might result in some songs falling by the wayside while others shine, Antibloom and Pink Moon have given each of these songs a platform to shine in a way that is not only fun and easy for fans to consume, but also made for an exciting year of new music from a band who is rightfully celebrating 25 years of success. There’s a reason why Silverstein have that kind of staying power, and it’s because they’re constantly pushing boundaries and finding new ways to expand on their sound while managing to stay true to the spirit, emotion and energy that drew fans to them in the first place.
