Acclaimed indie-alternative singer-songwriter Ally Evenson has unveiled her eagerly awaited new single, “The Line,” available everywhere now via Assemble Sound/Atlantic Records. Produced by Evenson with longtime collaborator nydge, the mischievously playful track, which premiered today on Zane Lowe’s Apple Music 1 show, is joined by a body horror-inspired official music video, which can be seen now below.
“‘The Line’ is a song originally made as a joke,” says Ally Evenson. “After the song was made, we realized it was actually extremely rad and decided it was LESS of a joke but still sort of a joke. Country D&B song about intrusive thoughts!”
“The video, however, is almost a prequel to my debut album, BLUE SUPER LOVE,” she adds. “I love body horror. I love acting. I made a joke about eating the blue hat I wear all the time and thought, what a way to switch eras. By vomiting up the hat…”
Named by Pigeons & Planes as one of “25 Artists to Watch in 2025,” Ally Evenson has earned critical acclaim and a fast-growing fanbase with her potent alt-pop songcraft, fueled by equal parts emotional introspection and intellectual bite. Raised near Port Huron, MI, Evenson was encouraged to write songs by her musician father and began performing in her early teens. She released her debut EP, 2020’s Not So Pretty, while studying at a Detroit music school, winning her a spot in Assemble Sound’s prestigious residency program. 2023’s In My Dreams, You Laugh at Me EP followed, showcasing Evenson’s singular approach to modern indie rock, merging big hooks with melancholic melodies and a growing lyrical gift.
Evenson made her full-length debut with 2024’s BLUE SUPER LOVE, garnering her ecstatic acclaim from publications such as Pitchfork, which raved, “BLUE SUPER LOVE sets itself apart by leaning hard into smeared textures – motion blur, the buzz of a vocoder, the grain of a digital camera – and sharp edges…Evenson’s voice – which is to say, both her writerly voice and her actual timbre – puts her in the fabulously bratty lineage of that dog., Veruca Salt, and Charly Bliss.” Tracks such as “One Trick Pony,” “Shitty Heaven,” and “You Poor Thing” gained further momentum with multiple placements on All Things Go’s weekly Top 10 playlist and Pigeons & Planes’ “11 Songs You Should Listen To This Week.” Evenson continued to hone her talents on stage, with tour runs supporting The Japanese House and Band of Horses, as well as touring the US and Europe as guitarist alongside her good friend Chloe Moriondo.
2025 has already proven to be a momentous year thus far, with tours alongside Wallice, daffo, and Kid Sistr, as well as a deluxe edition of BLUE SUPER LOVE adding such previously unreleased tracks as “Johnny,” “Do U See Me,” and “Scary/Calm.” Now, with “The Line,” Ally Evenson sets forth on her keenly anticipated next chapter, affirming her already remarkable gifts and promising more ingenious and inspired new music to come.
