We introduced different times German, Reykjavík /Leipzig-based pianist and composer Philipp Rumsch. One year after the stunning μ: of anxiety x discernment (Denovali Records) with the moniker Philipp Rumsch Ensemble, he’s back with a live version of the two-track EP called “A Forward-Facing Review“, originally released in 2017.
In 2018 and 2019 he played some special solo shows that featured the music of the EP A Forward-Facing Review in an open, improvised setting. With the use of piano preparations, live-processing and synthesizers he created sound-worlds that differed a lot from the dominating neo-classical approach of piano and electronics.
In autumn 2019 he played a concert at Christuskirche in Bochum which was filmed by video artist Leon Schirdewahn-Debring. Watch it below.
He explains: “Between 2018 and 2020 I played a few selected solo shows whose program was conceptually based on my 2017 EP ‘A Forward-Facing Review’. The two pieces on the EP combine elements of ambient, minimalism, contemporary notated music and conceptual improvisation.
The concerts were built around those compositions and in mostly open, improvised forms I investigated various methods of piano preparation and live-processing (next to some more synth-based structures). In November 2019 I had the chance to play at beautiful Christuskirche in Bochum within the ‘urban urtyp’ concert series and I’m super happy that Leon Schirdewahn-Debring filmed the concert. The music of the video is an improvised variation of ‘A Forward-Facing Review – Part I’ from the eponymous EP.“
