Indie rock titans and eight-time GRAMMY nominees Death Cab for Cutie—comprising Benjamin Gibbard, Nicholas Harmer, Jason McGerr, Dave Depper, and Zac Rae—have officially announced their 11th studio album, I Built You A Tower. The highly anticipated record is set for release on June 5th via ANTI- Records.

To celebrate the announcement, the band has shared their latest single, “Punching The Flowers.” The track is a gnarled, angular rock anthem that showcases the band’s evolution. According to Gibbard, the song was inspired by a real-life encounter with a toddler throwing a tantrum outside a bodega. He transformed this observation into a poignant metaphor for a man trapped by his own perceptions of beauty and stability, viewing his circumstances as both a sanctuary and a cage.

“‘Punching the Flowers’ is a song about stagnation and the feeling of being imprisoned by The Known. And about the damage done when someone ventures deeper into the unknown,” explains Gibbard.

A Return to Independent Roots

I Built You A Tower marks a significant milestone for the band, signaling their return to independent roots following a two-decade tenure with Atlantic Records. Produced and engineered by John Congleton, the album was crafted during a focused three-week session at Animal Rites in Los Angeles, with additional recording taking place across the band members’ home studios in Seattle, Bellingham, Los Angeles, and Portland.

The creative process for this record was deeply influenced by the band’s recent history. Following massive, sold-out anniversary tours for their seminal albums Transatlanticism and Plans, the group found themselves in a period of intense personal and professional reflection. For Gibbard, the “tower” became a symbolic structure—a way to contain the grief and pressure of navigating both a high-profile career and personal upheaval.

Reconciling the Past for a New Future

The band views this new collection of songs not as a nostalgic “return to form,” but as a reclamation of their core ethos. “The anniversary tours exorcised any nostalgia in our systems,” notes Depper. “We felt part of this powerful force greater than all of us and went into the studio with a sense of, how can we capture that feeling and put it into something new?”

Harmer adds that the experience brought the band back to their earliest days, where the primary goal was simply to create music that resonated with the members in the room. This renewed confidence is palpable throughout the upcoming album, which promises to be a raw and honest exploration of reconciling past selves to locate a new future.

Death Cab for Cutie will support the release with a tour across Europe and the UK this September and October, featuring support from Pool Kids.
