When the fires began to spread across Oregon in early September, tens of thousands of people were evacuated from their homes; many would go on to lose them entirely. Air quality in parts of the state became so bad that it maxed out the scale used to measure air quality. Meanwhile, the pandemic still gripped the state. We sent photographer Ricardo Nagaoka into the field to document the people affected by the fires — and how they were surviving.
