M.I.A. Settles on an Album Title, Finally Confirms Release Date
'AIM' will arrive on September 9
Update: Before its official release on Friday, M.I.A. decided to premiere “Go Off,” her collaboration with Skrillex and Blaqstarr, on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show. Listen below.
Well, it looks like M.I.A. is resisting the urge to leak her new album (for now). The singer-songwriter shared some lyrics to the Skrillex-assisted song “Go Off” on Twitter yesterday; the track itself is supposed to drop on July 15.
Now, M.I.A. has shared text on her website by the writer Sinthujan Varatharajah that addresses the treatment of asylum seekers across the globe. The bottom of the page reads “M.I.A. // A.I.M.,” along with a potential confirmation of the album’s title and release date: “AIM 9/9.” So if you boil all of that down, it looks like the previously working title of Matahdatah has been changed to AIM. According to Pitchfork, a rep has confirmed that we can in fact expect to see it on September 9. If M.I.A. doesn’t leak it before that, of course.
