A slow winter jam, “Lanterns” is Oklahoma-based artist coldbrew’s contribution to the newest Tony Thriller Chill Beats Co. compilation: A Lofi Christmas Story, vol 1.
The track opens with a lazy piano riff, looping through a charmingly simple chord progression as the percussion builds up around it. A sidechained pad meanders around the fringes of the stereo space; the width of the sustained note lending space and character to the warm soundscape it encircles.
Tight and punchy, the drums find the perfect balance of gentle “slap” that serves as the universal hallmark of a quality lofi tune. The kick cuts through the mix like a hot knife through butter, while the snare dances high and wide above the atmosphere below.
